ILWU International President James Spinosa today affirmed the union’s support for the contract negotiations affecting the 750 members of ILWU Local 63 OCU (Office Clerical Unit).
“We stand in full support of our brothers and sisters in Local 63 OCU,” Spinosa said. “We understand negotiations are making progress and we support both sides working together to reach a resolution.
“The ILWU International is monitoring these talks very closely and we will make ourselves available if we can assist in any way.
“We are familiar with the dislocations the new technology can cause and believe workers have a right to some job security in those situations,” Spinosa said.
Negotiations between Local 63 OCU and a group of 16 employers at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are set to resume July 9. Office clericals provide customer service for shipping lines and handle the paperwork involved with booking, documenting and tracking cargo.
