Local 6 members return to work after standing in solidarity with locked out garbage truck drivers

(OAKLAND) July 29, 2007. Members of ILWU Warehouse Division Local 6--who work in industries like waste disposal and recycling in the East Bay--successfully endured nearly a month without a paycheck or benefits as they stood in support of locked out garbage truck drivers. The 300 garbage workers were ready to return to work as drivers approved a new contract today.

The 300 workers were standing behind more than 500 Teamsters Local 70 truck drivers, who were locked out of their jobs by their employer, Waste Management, Inc. (WMI).  The labor movement also rallied to support the workers and their families. The ILWU Coast Committee and the ILWU International donated $30,000 to support the families at Local 6, while Longshore Local 10 and Marine Clerks Local 34 donated $11,000 and $10,000, respectively.
