Los Angeles – Community and labor groups will conduct a protest in front of a troubled firm known as “Clean Harbors Los Angeles” on Friday, July 20 at 10 AM at 18025 South Broadway in Gardena, California.

Clean Harbors has been the subject of complaints by the California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control, the State Water Resources Board and the California Air Resources Board. The firm is a major national environmental services provider that is headquartered in Norwell, Massachusetts and listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Ruben Hurtado, a leader of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 56 based in San Pedro, said: “It’s disappointing to see a company in the environmental clean-up business that’s been charged with violating our clean air and water laws.” Local 56 members work each day in and around the Ports of LA and Long Beach where they clean up toxic spills.

Clean Harbors is also a violator of health and safety regulations. Over the past ten years, the company has been cited by Federal and State OSHA officials for almost 50 violations; 27 of which were categorized as “serious.”

Hurtado explained, “ILWU 56 members want Clean Harbors to lives up to their name by providing quality service for the community and a safe environment for workers.”
