ILWU Statement on the Earthquake in Syria and Turkey
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union expresses our condolences and solidarity to all those in Turkey and Syria who were affected by the devastating earthquake on February 6th.
This disaster has disproportionately affected the most vulnerable people many of whom have been impacted by conflict and displacement from the Syrian Civil War for more than a decade. Our sincere gratitude to the first responders and relief workers searching for survivors and providing lifesaving assistance in the face of this terrible tragedy.
As residents of the Pacific Rim with its history of earthquakes, we know the impact that disasters such as this can have on a society. It is our hope that as Syria and Turkey rebuild, workers are empowered to make their lives better, and we will seek opportunities to support them as they do.
